How to Jump-Start a Car's Battery

Here at Hildebrand Motors in Old's, Alberta, we know that leaving your vehicle for a long time or cooler weather can cause your vehicle's battery to die. We recommend that you start your vehicle at least once every two to three days, especially in cooler weather. If you start your car and get no power, you might be dealing with a dead battery.

Here's How To Jump-Start Your Vehicle

If using another car's battery, park that car close enough so that its cables will reach your dead battery. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles. Clamp an end of the positive cable to the clamp on the other battery's positive cable. Connect the negative cable to the good battery's negative terminal. Connect the other end of the negative cable to the ground on the vehicle that has the dead battery. Make sure that any metal surface is away from the battery, especially the engine block. You do not want to touch the two ends of the cable together as you do this.

Then, start the car that has a working battery so it can distribute electricity. Try starting the car with the drained battery. If it is a no-start, check the connections and clean or tighten as required. If the drained battery starts, leave the car running for at least 20 minutes so that the battery can recharge. If the vehicle does not start, you might be looking at another issue. If you hear clicking and get some lights coming on, you could have a faulty starter. Sometimes, a bad alternator can be the issue. Those two problems need to be checked. You can book a service appointment directly through our Service Centre.

How to Avoid a Dead Battery

Start your parked vehicle every couple of days and let it run for a good 15-20 minutes. Get routine inspections done under the hood to ensure that you aren't facing any issues there. You can conveniently have your battery tested by our expert Technicians here at Hildebrand Motors.
